HIstory of Reiki

Reiki is a simple, very profound method of healing with the hands. It is done fully clothed, is non-invasive and non-manipulative. Reiki also provides relaxation, relief from stress, reduces pain, promotes balance, wellness for the body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

Mikao UsuiReiki is a technique started by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1914 in Japan when he received the symbols used during his meditation. His student Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to the U.S. in 1940. In the past 10 years Reiki has become better known throughout the world. More and more people are discovering the benefits of Reiki and are receiving attunements to be able to provide this powerful healing technique for themselves and then learning how to provide Reiki for others.

The National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland is conducting studies on the use of Reiki. One of these studies explores the effects of Reiki on patients with fibromyalgia. The nurses at Saint Francis hospital in Wilmington Delaware use Reiki with their Cardiac care patients. Einstein Hospital is using Reiki with AIDS patients. Many nurses at various hospitals are discovering the benefits of using Reiki as part of their care.

Reiki is composed of rei that can be interpreted as spiritually guided and ki that can be interpreted as life force energy, known in China as Chi and India as Prana.
